Group projects

A common theme that I hear from employers is that they are looking for employees who can work well with others. Looking back on my experiences, the people who could work well with a variety of people were always valued highly in an organization. This is why in education we have group projects. The problem is most students, including me, hate group projects and don't want their efforts to be assessed based on the efforts of their entire groups. Once students get over this hang-up they seem to figure out how to work with their group. Today I will be working on getting over this hang-up.

  1. Jim - My own children always moaned about group projects, because they felt they did most of the work. So I do group projects, but hardly ever give group grades. Students know I'm assessing them on participation and helping out.

Once when I was setting up groups I put all the slackers in one group. It was hysterical watching them discover that nobody was going to do the work for them - and one of them finally picked up the ball. I try to do that at least once a year - the group members always find it very educational. ;>
